Caribtours Foodie Guide to Grenada September 29, 2016

Grenada is known as the Isle of Spice for a reason, we have put together a guide with our favourite foodie destinations and experiences for you to relish on this beautiful island. From exploring the hidden cocoa farms, to dancing the night away at a Fish Friday Festival, we have something for everyone to enjoy.

Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Station

Grenada is famous for its delicious nutmeg! The Gouyave Nutmeg processing station is one of the largest on island, where you can see behind the scenes of the initial picking, grading, and packaging of the nutmegs. This station is located in Gouyave, a bustling fishing village on the West Coast.

‘Nutmeg World’ is located at the end of the tour and is the perfect place to pick up some delicious spices to take home and to bring a little bit of Grenada home with you.

Street Food Wednesday’s at Dodgy Dock, True Blue Bay

True Blue Bay wanted their guests to experience the true taste of Grenadian cuisine without the hassle of having to leave the resort, and so, Street Food Wednesday was born
Every week True Blue Bay welcome local vendors to Dodgy Dock, giving them the opportunity to showcase some of the finest local street food (and at street food prices)! From your perch overlooking the harbour enjoy the freshest fried snapper with breadfruit and sample the national dish, Oil Down; an eclectic mix of salted meats, pumpkin and cooking bananas among many spices and herbs.

The Grenada Chocolate Fest

This festival celebrates Grenada’s ethically produced, organic cocoa and chocolate. It is a perfect experience for all those chocolate lovers out there! The festival has been running for 3 years now, and is a roaring success.

It’s a real ‘bean to bar’ experience, from learning how this delicious chocolate is created; to discovering the cocoa farms hidden in the glorious rainforest.

After a long day of exploring, you can treat yourself to a unique dining experience, with cuisine inspired by the delectable cocoa plant.

Belmont Estate

Belmont Estate is an authentic 17th century plantation; they hold a variety of tours, one being around their cocoa processing facilities.
You are guided around the beautiful estate seeing the process of how the chocolate is created; the story of cocoa is really brought to life. They show you both the traditional, and modern way of how the beans are picked, dried and fermented until they reach the final product, this tour is extremely insightful and illustrative.

‘Gouyave Fish Friday’, weekly Gouyave Fish Festival

Gouyave Fish Friday is a weekly fish festival booming with flavour and fun, and most importantly delicious fish. Seeing as Gouyave is a fishing village it is a very appropriate place for this weekly festival to take place.
The streets of Gouyave are shut down and brought to life with music, dancing, fun and food; it is an experience we would definitely recommend.
