Antigua Sailing week is almost upon us, so we thought we'd give you the low down on the most famous sailing regatta in the Caribbean.

From humble beginnings back in 1968, when just ten boats took part, the regatta has developed into one of the most prestigious yachting events on the sailing calendar. And it's no surprise, since Antigua is high on the list of the world's best sailing locations.

It's a great time to visit Antigua, and soak up the party atmosphere that consumes the whole island. You don’t have to be a sailor to get involved; many non-competing yachts follow the racers to get close to the action, and there are plenty of vantage points around the island from which to watch the action if you don't fancy taking to the waves.

After the races there are parties held most nights at venues including Nelson's Dockyard, Falmouth Harbour and Nonsuch Bay, where you can expect live music, beach barbecues and spectacular entertainment, as well as the opportunity to catch up on the day's events.

If you're a captain of the high seas the closing date for race entries is 17 April, and Sailing Week runs from 25 April to 1 May 2015.
