Voted the best resort in Africa by readers of Conde Nast Traveller Magazine, Ulusaba is Sir Richard Branson's exclusive private game reserve, situated in the wildlife-rich Sabi Sand region.
The resort has its own private airstrip and is a 1 hour 20 minute flight from Johannesburg airport or a 30 minute flight from Kruger airport. There are 21 rooms and suites, spread between Rock, Cliff and Safari Lodges. Rock Lodge sits on a hilltop and has 8 rooms, some with a private infinity edged plunge pool. The luxurious Cliff Lodge is just a short walk away, and includes your own chef and private game drive vehicle if you book both suites for exclusive use. Safari Lodge is located on the banks of a dry riverbed, and many of the suites are connected by swing bridges. Our favourite is the Treehouse Suite, which has a large private deck with views over the Xikwenga Dam, where hippos and elephants come to bathe.
There are 2 floodlit tennis courts, a Bush Observatory for stargazing and the Cub’s Club to keep younger guests entertained. Meals are served at communal candlelit tables, or the hotel can arrange a romantic private dinner for two. Two game drives are included daily, and there is usually a safari walk after breakfast.
