Welcome to Cap Town's most iconic hotel, a sophisticated and stylish haven of good taste that first opened its doors back 1899. Mount Nelson's understated colonial style and exquisite gardens lend the hotel a real old world elegance, but this is no museum; the luxurious accommodation, downtown location, and innovative cuisine mean this is still the place to stay in Cape Town.
The 198 rooms and suites are spread across seven wings and are decorated in an understated and contemporary style. All rooms have a marble bathroom, flat screen TV and WiFi, and some also have a balcony. The suites are more spacious, with an iPod docking station and open-plan sitting area, and the higher categories also have a Nespresso machine. The lavish Presidential Suite has a separate dining area, large living room, balcony with sun loungers, kitchenette, stylish 1930s baccarat crystal light fittings and an original desk from 1899, the year the hotel opened. The Garden Cottage Suites are housed within a row of restored cottages near the pool, and each has its own rose garden enclosed by a picket fence, making them perfect for couples and honeymooners. Interconnecting rooms are also available for families.
The food at Planet Restaurant is out of this world, with a mouthwatering menu of international dishes drawing on local and seasonal produce, while Oasis Bistro is open for buffet breakfast and lunch, with a sunny al fresco terrace overlooking the gardens and pool. The cosy Planet Bar is the place for pre or post dinner drinks, a stylish venue serving up cocktails, Champagne, fine wines and canapés. Don’t miss the opportunity to try one of the best afternoon teas in the city, with treats including a traditional South African ‘melktert’ (milk tart) and the signature Mount Nelson tea which has been expertly blended from six different teas, including rose petals from the hotel’s garden.
There are 2 heated outdoor swimming pools (one suited to families and one for adults only), plus 2 tennis courts and a fitness centre. The wonderful Librisa Spa has 8 treatment rooms, a sauna, steam bath and plunge pool, and offers treatments in partnership with skincare specialist, Africology. The Nellie and Nelson Activity Centre for children aged 3-12 yrs is packed full of educational games and toys, and the Teens Lounge for those aged 12-18 yrs is equipped with an Xbox 360, Wii, entertainment system and big screen TV.
