The UAE is an exciting place where everything is bigger and better, a place where concepts become reality and where the cutting edge meets world class. But there are still some misconceptions about the country, so we have done the myth busting for you…
The myth: It’s really strict
The truth: Probably one of the UAE’s most common misconceptions. Generally the UAE is a very tolerant place and whilst you should always be respectful of local customs, holding hands or a kiss on the cheek will not land you in prison.
The myth: It’s too hot to go outside
The truth: Although the summer months (June, July and August) can reach high temperatures- everywhere is brilliantly air-conditioned (even the bus stops) and a dip in the pool will always cool you down. For the rest of the year the weather is beautiful and the winter months (November to February) are similar to a Mediterranean summer day. And there’s no need to worry about rain…they hardly get any.
The myth: The waters are no good for snorkelling or diving
The truth: Some areas have no natural reefs to harbour large numbers of fish, but offshore, there are wrecks and reefs that are bustling with life- two of the best are Zainab and MV Ludwig . With its mostly warm waters the UAE is a great place for beginner divers, those looking to get certified or just get acquainted with diving.
The myth: There’s no culture
The truth: It’s easy for people to be blinded by the glitz and glamour of the region but if you dig a little deeper you will find a wealth of culture and history. Head to the old Bastakia Quarter’s labyrinth of winding streets, dotted with 13th century architecture, museums and galleries, have fun bartering at the Deira Gold Souk or ride the traditional abra along Deira Creek.
The myth: It’s unbelievably flash, with gold-dispensing ATMs, fleets of police supercars, and jaw-dropping buildings everywhere.
The truth: This one is totally true. Dubai has the tallest building in the world, Abu Dhabi is home to the fastest roller coaster in the world at Ferrari World, and between them, probably the highest number of custom-made supercars in the world. It certainly makes for a memorable holiday.
